Eat + Drink This : Episode 3, Wine with Alpana Singh

We don’t discriminate around here at Beer Snack Blog.

We celebrate all foods and beverages – not just beer and not just snacks.

It is in that spirit that we reached out to Alpana Singh, Master Sommelier and proprietor of The Boarding House, to tell us a little bit about wine and her new restaurant in Chicago’s Gold Coast.

Not going to lie, sipping wines w/Alpana on a random weekday afternoon is fun.

First and foremost, she’s a fun person to be around. She makes you feel at ease, like you’ve known each other for years. Before we started shooting we talked about vacations (or lack there of), the stresses of running a restaurant, dinners out with friends, and fighting off that last winter cold.

And she knows her shit.

Pardon my French, but I’m always impressed when people have a deep knowledge of any subject. Alpana was the youngest female Master Sommelier and her resume reads like this: Sommelier at Everest, Director of Wine and Spirits at Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises (+/- 70 restaurants), host of PBS’s Check Please! for ten years, regular appearances on Chicago Tonight, author of Alpana Pours: About Being a Woman, Loving Wine, and Having Great Relationships and now proprietor of The Boarding House.

Alpana recently opened up The Boarding House – a wine focused restaurant (duh) that has three distinct areas within the structure: a beautiful bar area on the main floor that has a massive wine glass chandelier (more of an installation), a main dining area on the next floor up that has soaring ceilings and amazingly huge windows overlooking Wells and Superior Streets, and The Cellar – a low lit bar/lounge area that has low profile leather couches and the perfect atmosphere for a late night cocktail.

Rose WineAlpana and I were able to taste four different wines – all of which were amazing and all of which are available on The Boarding House’s by the glass wine menu (until they rotate them out). Check out the short video to see what you should be drinking this summer as well as some other tips for selecting wines at restaurants.

Lastly, I wanted to mention that The Boarding House has wine events all the time. Their next event is on April 24th from 6-8pm and features 8 different wine and cheese pairings. The wifey and I attended their Valentine’s Day wine tasting and it was awesome.
